      <image:title>First Rescue - Meet "Houdini"</image:title>
<image:caption>I called him "Houdini" because no one has ever devised a knot or harness from which he couldn't escape. Here is his new $20 harness. I bought it only because the vet insisted it was impossible to escape from. Needless to say, he made pretty short work of it. I put it on him and left him for 5 minutes. I came back and there it was, on the ground.</image:caption>

      <image:title>First Rescue - Bad puppy</image:title>
<image:caption>Leading my lost, big-eared puppy, Houdini, back home after he ran away 3 times on the first day. I was getting pretty frustrated. Is there no knot known to mankind this puppy can't undo?</image:caption>

      <image:title>First Rescue - Finally...contact</image:title>
<image:caption>Had a breakthrough with Houdini today. He has been emotionally detached ever since we rescued him...all he wanted to do was eat and be left alone. I left him his space but was starting to think his abuse had been so bad maybe the best we can do for him was just give him food and medical care and just ensure he doesn't get abused any more. But today I went over to him and just stood still...and he came up to me and gave me a big hug.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Houdini's new life. Just a few weeks ago he was beaten every day and had to carry heavy loads on his severely strained back, not to mention someone literally poked his eye out. People say I spoil him. After what he's been through I can't spoil him enough.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My vet called me late at night and said he had a lamb that was about to be slaughtered because he was sick, but if I was willing to pay for his medical bills I could take him. Of course I said yes. He pulled up a few minutes later and pulled out this trembling poor thing from the trunk of his car. It was dark so I couldn't really see anything. <image:title>Sheep - A Precious Life is Lost</image:title>
<image:caption>Unfortunately, when I saw him today, he was really ill. He had completely given up on a life in which no one had ever cared, and measured his value in pounds. Yet his life was worth so much more than that. As he rubbed his head against my hand I was perhaps giving him an opportunity that was denied him his whole life...an opportunity to express to a human his capacity to love. Yes, he did die 2 hours later, among calls for his throat to be slit so he could be consumed. But that's not what happened. His life had value in itself. His last breath had value. His dying with dignity rather than a pool of blood had value. As he took his last breath, I wanted him to know that his life had meaning to at least one person in this world.</image:caption>

So the first day I took Houdini out for his run, we went past my neighbor and his wife who were picking olives. I smiled and waved at them as I jogged by and joked, "Just taking my dog for a run." The lady's jaw dropped and she just stared at us, expressionless. As I passed, she turned to her husband and said, "Mohammad, go talk to the foreigner. <image:title>Fish - Another Gift from a Passer-by?</image:title>
<image:caption>While on our morning jog, two guys in a car pulled up next to Houdini and I. One guy rolled down the window and said, "I have some fresh fish." Remembering the guys who gave Houdini and me zaatar pies a few days ago, I got excited and motioned behind me to Houdini, "You mean for my puppy?" The guy looked back expecting to find a puppy dog but instead finding a slightly overweight donkey quietly looking up at him from the end of a long leash. The guy did a double take then looked back at me. He said, "Listen. I said I have some fresh fish." I then remembered that fresh fish is a delicacy in the village and it would be unheard of to feed it to a pet, so I figured he must be offering it to me. "No thanks, I don't eat meat," I replied, forgetting that "meat" means cow or lamb in Arabic, but certainly not fish. The guy didn't know what to do with me. He was trying to sell me some fresh fish, and after I asked him if it was for my dog while pointing to a donkey, I then told him I didn't eat lamb. The driver and he just looked at each other without saying a word and drove off. As they left, I smiled to Houdini and asked, "isn't it amazing how friendly the villagers are?"</image:caption>

The driver and he just looked at each other without saying a word and drove off. As they left, I smiled to Houdini and asked, "isn't it amazing how friendly the villagers are?"</image:caption>

I just took this picture and put the lamb in the shelter for the night</image:caption>

<image:caption>The vet said Houdini's stomach was too big and that he needed exercise. So I have been taking him for daily jogs every morning. Someone sold him a broken donkey and told him it was a dog."</image:caption>

      <image:title>First Rescue - OUR FIRST RESCUE</image:title>
<image:caption>Tonight we got our first rescue at Daily Hugz. He's had a tough life and lost his eye, but he certainly hasn't lost his spirit.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/563d2777e4b0b30b51007032/1450271613890-0SJIW1QZ22W9NGKTOQZN/mock.jpg</image:loc>

      <image:title>Dogs (Old) - Boss</image:title>
<image:caption>Boss adopted Hugz when he just showed up on his own several years ago. He’s really earned his name this year. When some huge boars approached Hugz, all the dogs ran for cover except Boss. He stayed, barking incessantly at the boars. And when one of them made a move towards Maad, he jumped in between Maad and the boar and chased him away...no small fete given that the boar weighed maybe four times boss's weight. Thanks to Virginia for sponsoring Boss.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dogs (Old) - Fayrooz</image:title>
<image:caption>Fayrooz was rescued when she was only a week old, in a freezing rain by the side of the road. She and her three siblings were brought back to life by our volunteer from France, Elodie. “Rooz” is now in great health. She’s super friendly and excitable and loves playing with other dogs, especially her sister Taybeh.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dogs (Old) - Nilin</image:title>
<image:caption>Nilin was found abandoned near a gas station in the village of Nilin, covered in dirt and oil. He fit right in when he got to Hugz and has been full of energy and curiosity ever seen he got here. He always tries to escape when we open the pen door, but he just runs around outside for a minute then comes right back, because he really loves his penmates and would rather play with them all day. Thanks to Kelly for sponsoring Nilin!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dogs (Old) - Awiyeh (“Strong One”)</image:title>
<image:caption>Usama rescued this abandoned puppy from Nablus. Although she is very playful and friendly, she is unexpectedly strong and doesn’t let other dogs push her around. She is besties with Badu and they spend all day playing with each other. It’s always fun to open her pen because she can’t wait to attack whoever visits and shower them with kisses and hugs.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dogs (Old) - Coco</image:title>
<image:caption>Coco was rescued from a gang of kids tormenting her in a gas station. Ironically, she has now become one of our friendliest dogs with children and she loves to run and play with them. Coco had a very rough spay operation and barely survived. Ever since then she has become a love bug, begging for a hug from the ones she loves. Thanks to Winifred for sponsoring Coco..</image:caption>

She and Rooz are inseparable and love to explore around Hugz together. Taybeh is an attention hog though (as you can see in the middle picture :)), and can’t wait for a human to enter the pen so she can play with them.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dogs (Old) - Farra (“Little Mouse”)</image:title>
<image:caption>Farra came to us one day old, along with her 8 siblings and mother in January. Her mother was rescued from the streets of Ramallah by the Palestine Animal League when she was still pregnant from kids who were throwing rocks at her stomach. Farra and her siblings were born in PAL’s care and were entrusted to Hugz the next day. Farra is really enjoying life at Hugz, and although she is free to roam the Asira hills, she is the only un-penned dog that has decided to never leave the grounds. This is the only home she has ever known and she wants to protect it, and even as a tiny puppy, she would always patrol the grounds and bark loudly if anything was amiss. Thanks, Margaret, for sponsoring Farra.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dogs (Old) - Amira (“Princess”)</image:title>
<image:caption>Amira is one of our favorites. She’been at Hugz for 3 years and is one of the friendliest dogs (she looks like she has some Lab in her). She just loves her belly rubbed and rolls over whenever she sees someone. Thanks, Laura, for sponsoring Amira.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dogs (Old) - Snoopy</image:title>
<image:caption>Snoopy is a cuddly 50 pound teddy bear and loves to be smothered with love. She is our biggest dog and spent a few months as matriarch, before she decided it was too much work. She still breaks up fights between the adolescent dogs (like Bean and Basboosa), but you can find her most of the day just laying around enjoying the warm sun. She loves being at Hugz and shows her gratitude every day. Thanks Sherri for sponsoring Snoopy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dogs (Old) - Badu</image:title>
<image:caption>Badu was surrendered to Hugz by a couple who had been working at a non-profit in Palestine but had to go back home. She’s a beautiful dog who loves people, but she had problems socializing with other dogs, especially at feeding time. We were so worried about her we even started looking at adopting her out. But then we introduced her to a new puppy named “Awiyeh”. Badu loved Awiyeh so much she’d let her eat right out of her mouth…inconceivable with any other dog. Now they are penmates and play with each other all day. Thanks for sponsoring Badu, Amy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dogs (Old) - Anwar (“Light”)</image:title>
<image:caption>Hussain rescued Anwar from the streets in Nablus and cared for him in his yard. As much as he loved him, his neighbors complained so he had no choice but to give him up to Hugz. Anwar had a hard time adjusting at first and the Hugz residents initially rejected him. It got so bad we started making arrangements to have poor Anwar shipped to America. But at the last moment, somehow Anwar was able to turn things around. He was able to make friends and be accepted and can now be seen running around playing with the other Hugz dogs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>10 was found wandering the fields outside Asira looking for food and water. After we brought him to Hugz, Dr. Rakan examined him and said there was evidence that he was hit by a car…maybe twice. Besides losing his leg, he also had his jaw damaged and had missing teeth.
